#13 – RF Cory Vaughn

By Toby Hyde on 22. Mar, 2011

Bats/Throws: R/R

Height/Weight: 6’3”/225

Acquired: 4th Rd 2010 (San Diego St.)

Born: 5/1/89 (Carmichael, CA)

2010 Rank: NR

Why Ranked Here: Vaughn earns this spot with a combination of prototypical right-field tools, major league bloodlines and serious schooling.

When Mets people discussed Vaughn this year, they started with his strength at 6’3” and lean 225 lbs of muscle.  He’s an average runner, with a strong arm, who can be an asset defensively in right.  There’s room on his frame to fill out and carry even more muscle.  On the heritage side, his dad Greg blasted 355 home runs over 15 major league seasons. Cory attended San Diego State where he played for Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn who, to employ dramatic understatement, knows a little bit about hitting.

Vaughn’s swing features a wide base and a minimal stride to allow his hands to work.  He has a little bit of swing and miss in his game; he struck out in 20% of his plate appearances in the New York-Penn League.

2010: Brooklyn’s MCU park can rob even good hitters of power, but it didn’t seem to bother Vaughn at all who bopped .307/.396/.557 and set franchise records with 14 home runs and 56 RBI in 72 games.

Dr. Pangloss Says: Above average RF who plays in multiple All-Star Games in his prime.

Debbie Downer Says: With a 20% K/rate in the New York Penn League, he won’t make enough contact to sustain a good enough batting average and on-base percentage of the offense-first RF position.

Projected 2011 Start: I know he tweeted that he’s going to Savannah, but I’m skeptical.  Vaughn, who will be 21 in May, should begin the 2011 season patrolling right field in advanced-A St. Lucie, where he will be trying to make the case that he is the Mets right fielder of the future.

MLB Arrival: September 2013
