#19 – 3B Zach Lutz

By Toby Hyde on 21. Mar, 2011

Bats/Throws: R/R

Height/Weight: 6’1”/220

Acquired: 5th rd 2007 (Alvernia)

Born: 6/3/86 (Reading, PA)

2010 Rank: 27

Why Ranked Here: Lutz, when he’s healthy can really hit.  However, for the fifth straight professional season, he missed time with injuries.  In 2010, again, he was limited by a broken foot, missing nearly two months from May 20-July 27.  At the plate, Lutz hits for power and draws walks.  There are questions about Lutz’s defensive abilities at third, and as someone who will turn 25 in 2011, his time is now.

2010: Even limited to 66 games at AA and AAA, Lutz still ripped 18 home runs, homering in 6.3% of his AA and AAA plate appearances. That’s excellent stuff.  Combine that power with a 12% walk rate, and you have a hitter who’s basically a finished product.

Dr. Pangloss Says: Lutz mashes AAA, and the Mets, who are set at third base, trade him for something of value to a team who needs an MLB-ready 3B.

Debbie Downer Says: I’ll pass on the guy who’s already 25 and has been injured in every one of his professional seasons as anything more than bench depth on a first-division team or a second-division starter.

Projected 2011 Start: AAA Buffalo
