Recap: Holt Deals + Davis Debuts + Church Rehab = Fun in Brooklyn – 6-26

By Toby Hyde on 27. Jun, 2008

Brooklyn (SSA – New York Penn League)

@ Brooklyn Cyclones 4, Aberdeen Ironbirds 2

Three big story lines from Brooklyn Thursday.

· Supplemental first rounder Brad Holt (pictured) threw five no-hit innings, walking one and striking out six. He told MiLB.com he did it with, “a little bit of everything. Fastballs down, in and out, both sides of the plate. I showed changeups every now and then. I threw a couple breaking balls, but, basically it was the same [as in college]. I just keep attacking with the fastball.”

· The Mets top pick, Ike Davis made his professional debut going 1-4 with a double.

· Rehabbing Ryan Church was 3-3 with a run and RBI.

It was a good day in Brooklyn. Any word on whether Javier Rodriguez or Sean Ratliff has signed (or is planning on signing)? The best place I can find to check out that info is Baseball America’s minor league transactions report, but that’s updated pretty sporadically.

I had read that the Mets and second round pick Javier Rodriguez has come to terms. Maybe he hasn’t officially signed, so they can’t announce it.

As for Holt, I’ve seen some film on him and he kind of reminds me of Mike Pelfrey, except he may have a little more velocity than Pelf but less movement.

It’ll be interesting to see if his change and breaking stuff develop because it’s hard to be a one pitch pitcher in the majors, at least if he hopes to remain a starter.

    I’m pulling for him.

Nice to see Holt get this type of start — hopefully he’ll continue to deal and develop

The Baseball America draft database states that both Ratliff and Rodriguez has already signed. Does anyone know where they might be assigned to?

I would imagine Ratliff, as a college player, would be going to Brooklyn — possible because Rodribuez is young he is going to one of the other clubs

If both have signed, my guess is that you’ll see Rodriguez at Kingsport and maybe Ratliff in Savannah or Brooklyn.

Ratcliff’s got a little Rob Deer in him. :)

Good pop, but he needs to connect more.

Good guesses. I’d put money on Ratliff in Bklyn. Did you see the long HR Ratliff hit in the CWS?

Sweet, they must have just recently updated that. Thanks! Looks like the Mets were serious about signing this year’s crop.

Yeah, they drafted guys who wanted to sign. I also think the new August 15 deadline has helped encourage teams and players to get deals done and stop messing around.
