Recap: Rodriguez Strong in Relief; Flores and Welch Keep Hitting – 6-25

By Toby Hyde on 25. Jun, 2008

Stefan Welch

Kingsport (R – Appalachian League)

@ Bristol White Sox 5, Kingsport Mets 4

I’d like to start on the mound in this one. Zachary Rosenbaum couldn’t get out of the third, but21-year old Jorge Rodriguez was brilliant in 4.1 relief innings. He didn’t give up a run, and struck out seven while giving up just two hits and a walk. In 9.2 IP, he’s punched out 14 and walked only two.

Of course, no K-Mets report would be complete without a Wilmer Flores update: the shortstop was 2-3 with a double and RBI. 19 year old Aussie 3B Stefan Welch was 2-5, his second straight multi-hit game.

Recap: Marte and Mejia Shine as F-Mart Continues to Rehab – 6-25

By Toby Hyde on 25. Jun, 2008

F-Mart Baseball CardGCL Mets (R – Gulf Coast League)

@ GCL Mets 8, GCL Marlins 3

CF Fernando Martinez notched his first extra base hit in his rehab, a first-inning triple, in a 2-5 game that included a run scored and seven innings of play in centerfield. 3B Jefry Marte, who turned 17 last week, continued his hot start, going 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Marte, who signed for $550,000 last winter, is 8-21 (.381) with four doubles and a triple. On the scale of international bonuses, that’s a big one; his is a name to remember. 2B Alonzo Harris was 2-4 with an RBI and 2 R.

Jenrry Mejia started, and went five innings for the win, giving up one run on four hits, fanning six. It’s relatively rare for GCL starters to earn wins. Through two starts, and ten innings the 18-year old has an exceptional peripherals: nine strikeouts and two walks and a gb/fb ratio of 3.75.

Michel Abreu

New Orleans (AAA – International League)

Omaha Royals 5, @ New Orleans Zephyrs 4

Tuesday’s win gives the Royals a clean sweep in New Orleans, their seventh straight win in the Crescent City. Two Abraham Nunez errors led to three unearned runs against Willie Collazo (4-5, 3.83) who yielded four runs on seven hits in five.

CF Jesus Feliciano was a perfect 2-2 with an RBI and three walks from the leadoff spot. Michel Abreu, (pictured) who’d mised nearly a week, returned and lifted his sixth homer of the year, a two-run job.

Binghamton (AA – Eastern League)

Altoona Curve 6, @ Binghamton Mets 4

Tobi Stoner was around the plate in his six innings, but the Curve straightened him out to the tune of four runs, nine hits and two homers.

The B-Mets offense rallied for four runs in the ninth, but it was too late. 1B Nick Evans was 3-4 and RF Caleb Stewart was 2-4 with a double and two RBI.

Ruben Tejada

St. Lucie (A+ – Florida State League)

@ St. Lucie Mets 3, Sarasota Reds 2

SS Ruben Tejada continued his roll by singling home CF Ezequiel Carrera with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Tejada was 3-4. Carrera was 2-4.

Michael Antonini was good (6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K) but not overpowering. Emary Frederick scooped up the win in the ninth.

Recap: Cleto Picks off Three – 6-24

By Toby Hyde on 25. Jun, 2008

Maikel Cleto

Savannah (A – South Atlantic League)

Columbus Catfish 3, @ Savannah Sand Gnats 2

2B Greg Veloz began a two-run Gnat first inning with a single in a 2-4 evening. Nick Giarraputo, who was also 2-4, singled home a run to complete the rally.

Maikel Cleto (2-5, 3.43) went seven innings and gave up three runs, but still lost. Amazingly, the righty picked three different Catfish off firstbase. Most righties are stoked to snag a runner a season, and Cleto (pictured) did it three times in a night? I don’t know how he did it, but he should probably start giving lessons.

Recap: What’s a Dolphin doing with Renegades and Cyclones? – 6-24

By Toby Hyde on 25. Jun, 2008

Eric Beaulac

Brooklyn (SSA – New York Penn League)

@ Hudson Valley Renegades 4, Brooklyn Cyclones 1

The Renegades touched Manuel Olivares for four runs on seven hits in 3.2 IP. Eric Beaulac (pictured) was awesome in two perfect innings to finish the game, striking out five. The Mets drafted Beaulac out of Le Moyne College. The Le Moyne College Dolphins are now officially one of my two favorite college mascots in America. The other: the Pittsburg State Gorillas, of course.

A Will Vogl double and a John Servidio triple were the ‘Clones only hits.
