Sunday Snippets

Saturday, the B-Mets playoff hopes took a hit when Binghamton dropped a 7-1 decision to the New Britain Rock Cats. Fernando Martinez lifted a ninth inning homer for the only B-Mets offense. Jose Sanchez lost, leaving him at 13 victories, one shy of the club record.

The loss combined with a Portland Sea Dogs 7-0 win over New Hampshire, leaves the ‘Dogs a magic number of one with two games to play to clinch the wild card spot. Clay Buchholz dealt eight shutout innings with 10 strikeouts in the Portland win.

St. Lucie won 1-0 behind a strong start (5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K) from Scott Moviel. Rehabbing Marlon Anderson was 2-3.

3B Stefan Welch was 2-4 with a homer and 3 RBI as the Gnats lost in 10 innings on a homer.

Ike Davis was 3-5 with 3 RBI in the Cyclones 5-4 win in ten innings.

Nick Carr is looking strong for St. Lucie Sunday.

Saturday Morning Morsels

The Zephyrs won a wild game 11-10 in 11 innings in their final game of 2008. Chris Aguila homered twice, both two run jacks. The first was part of a four-run fourth that put the Zs up 4-0. The second one in the bottom of the 11th won the game after the Sounds scored in the top of the inning.

Jon Niese started, throwing 65 pitches over 2.2 innings scoreless innings. He walked two and gave up one hit while striking out one. Brandon Knight allowed four runs in four innings. Bobby Parnell made his first relief appearance, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk in an inning.

Each team scored three runs in the ninth.

With Hurricane Gustavo approaching, and New Orleans scheduled for evacuation, the Zephyrs have cancelled the final three games of their season.

Dillon Gee gave up one run on four hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out four in the B-Mets 3-1 win over New Britain. The Portland Sea Dogs also won to stay a game ahead of the B-Mets.

SS Wilmer Flores was 3-4 with a run scored and made his first NYP League error in Brooklyn’s 3-2 win.

Brevard County swept a doubleheader 10-1 and 5-2 from St. Lucie. Maikel Cleto lost his FSL debut in game two when he gave up five runs in the third. All told, he allowed five runs on five hits and two walks in five innings.

The Columbus Catfish beat the Sand Gnats 9-4. Eric Beaulac gave up five runs on six hits and four walks in four innings.

Ambiorix Burgos had a bad first inning (2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K) in game one of St. Lucie’s doubleheader with Brevard County. Marlon Anderson is 0-3.

Eric Beaulac (1-1, 2.11) is on the bump for the Gnats. Listen

Wilmer Flores is batting seventh and playing SS for the Brooklyn Cyclones who are hosting Oneonta. Listen.

Owen FSL MVPitcher; Thole an All-Star

The Florida State League named Dylan Owen the League’s Most Valuable Pitcher while C Josh Thole was named to the post-season All-Star team. Owen was 12-6 with a 3.43 ERA, tying for the league lead in wins and was ninth in ERA. His 116 strikeouts in 133.2 IP are currently third in the league.

C Josh Thole has hit .301/.384/.430 with outstanding plate discipline (45 BB and 38 strikeouts). The 21-year old has 25 doubles and five homers.

Flores Flourishes in Bkln Debut – Mejia Strong Again

Brooklyn (SSA – New York Penn League)

@ Brooklyn Cyclones 6, Oneonta 0

The Brooklyn Cyclones won their fifth straight to move within two games (three in the loss column) of the wild card leading Batavia Muckdogs.

Wilmer Flores led the Brooklyn offense with three hits in his debut while filling in for Juan Lagares who has a sore throwing arm. He was 3-4 with a double and an RBI single. Ike Davis (.239/.312/.304) was 2-4 to extend his hitting streak to six games. Davis’s last three hit game was June 30th. In the interim, Flores has six games of three hits or more. Jordan Abruzzo was 2-4 with two RBI.

Jenry Mejia fired five shutout innings walking three and striking out six. Wendy Rosa did him one better, striking out seven in 3.2 innings. He also walked three.

B-Mets Move Within Game of Playoffs

Binghamton (AA – Eastern League)

Binghamton Mets 5, @ New Hampshire FisherCats 0

Tobi Stoner worked around two hits and three walks to give his team five scoreless innings as the B-Mets moved within a game of the Portland Sea Dogs for the Wild Card spot in the Eastern League. The B-Mets are one game back with four to play.

3B Shawn Bowman was 3-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Ambio Concepcion was 2-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored.
