Players who haven't played above A ball are very unlikely to be taken, even in the minor league portion. In the Mets case most of these players are too young to have spent enough years in the system or were just drafted in the past two years.

But by quick look at the St. Lucie roster I would guess that DJ Wabick, Brahiam Maldonado, Joe Holden, Ryan Coultas, German Marte, and Julio Polanco are eligible.

And from Savannah, Sean McCraw, a few OF's and P's no one will take (and frankly I hope aren't back anyway), will be eligible.

There are a ton of guys in everyone's system who are eligible, which is why players seem to come out of nowhere. You simply cannot protect everyone you want to keep.

From the AAA and AA rosters nearly everyone who isn't a minor league free agent is eligible for the rule v draft. Only Bowman, Caleb Stewart, and Sal Aguilar could be in any danger, imo.

Jesus Feliciano OF - 11 years in minors, Mets just resigned him as a minor league free agent. I assume he is eligible, but it matters not.

Eddy Camacho LHRP - signed as 21 yo, 5 years in the system.

Sal Aguilar RHSP - signed as 22 yo, 4 years in the system. Mets should assign him to AAA, protecting him from the minor league portion of the draft.

Eric Brown RHSP - signed as 21 yo, 4 years in the system.

Jacob Ruckle RHP - signed as 19 yo, 4 years in the system. (recovering from labrum surgery.)

Edgar Alfonso LHRP - signed as 17 yo, 7 years in the system.

Elvys Quezada RHRP - signed as 21 yo, 6 years in the minors.

Mike Nickeas C - signed as 21 yo, 5 years in the minors.

Rafael Arroyo C - signed as 21 yo, 5 years in the system.

Jon Malo, utility - signed as 21 yo, 4 years in the system.

Shawn Bowman - eligible as discussed

Jose Coronado SS - signed as a 17 yo, but didn't start playing (stateside?) until he was 19. played 4 years in the system after turning 19. Not sure if he is or isn't eligible.

Manny Garcia 2B - he signed as an 18 yo in Sept of 2004 meaning this will be his 5th rule v draft, but I think he might be excluded because he didn't play in 2004... He struggled at AA last year, so he wont be taken.

Josh Petersen IF/OF - signed as 21 yo, 5 years in the system. (I hope someone gives him a shot to play everyday in AAA, but I would guess he will be riding the pine in Buffalo in 2009)

Caleb Stewart OF - signed as 21 yo, 5 years in the system. AAA ready corner OF with some pop, I wouldn't be surprised if a PCL team picked him up.

I agree about Bowman, but I doubt someone will take him in the major league portion. He's shown no reason to think he would be able to hang in the bigs this year.

They bought Stokes from Tampa because they waived him and the Mets claimed him. They traded him to the Mets for cash because of the claim.

If not Lugo, they claimed someone else on waivers last winter...
nope, actually you spoke without doing the homework

1/30/08 - Claimed RHP Ruddy Lugo off waivers from the Athletics.

I'll put it on the to-do list... More likely would be 5 guys who some other team might take a chance on...

BaseballAmerica.com usually puts out a list of the top rule V players available throughout the high minors, but I've given up trying to predict who the Mets might take since you can't predict what the other teams ahead of them will do. The Mets also have a knack for taking players you don't expect them to take, especially in the lower levels of the draft.

The Mets bought Stokes from Tampa Bay. Lugo was signed as a minor league free agent.

Still seems strange not to add Bowman to the roster, if only as a possible trade chip. And it's not like he'd be crowding anybody else off the roster.

Toby,

Could you post the complete list of Mets eligible to be taken in the Rule V draft?

last year the Mets were in the same position and claimed two pitchers on waivers when other teams couldn't fit them on their roster. Stokes and Lugo. And they picked up Steven Register in the Rule V draft.

I would look for similar actions in an effort to find some new bullpen parts.

It seems strange that Omar would leave so much room open on his 40 man roster and not protect someone like Bowman. Toby, if you were right about 33 players on the roster prior to adding Carp, that means Omar still has 6 slots open. Even if they pick up 3 Free Agents, that leaves 3 open slots to draft other Rule 5 players? Highly unlikely unless they are truly going to go with the "throw as many relievers against the wall and see which ones stick" theory to fill their bullpen.

Today was the deadline to protect prospects for the Rule 5 draft, so Bowman will be eligible to be selected.

This might have been a mistake on the Mets part, I personally would have protected him, of course I think I might be overrating him because he's a "Feel good story" type player.

Still, playing devils advocate, Bowman struggled to hit AA pitching, struck out 28% of the time, and has known well-established back problems. I could see teams shying away from him in favor of other prospects, and think it's very possible he goes unselected.
