Tad Iguchi is planning on going back to Japan. Sending him back down was just a formality so that he could opt for Free Agency (As he is out of options)

If the Mets were short on roster spots they could do something creative and outright Daniel Murphy to AAA until opening day. He isn't eligible for the draft, but he is on the 40 man roster...

The Phillies just did the same with Tad Iguchi of all people.

Funny how the service time rules still apply to "veteran" Japanese players.

we could come up with about 5 or 6 laughable names that got protected over Flores, but I think you nailed the most obscure one.

Omar decided to add Jason Standridge to the roster for two and a half winter months (and then let him go), instead of protecting Flores.

Flores was a heartbreaker given the Mets considered him a true top ten prospect. I always wondered if the Pena signing influenced their decision to not protect Flores? Third (emergency) catchers, situational relievers, and fast/strong defensive middle infielders or outfielders are probably the easiest for small market teams to justify carrying on their roster for a year, even if they are not truly MLB ready.

If I remember correctly, Omar made another mistake a couple of weeks earlier when he signed Alou without waiting to see if SF was going to offer him arbitration, thereby possible costing the Mets our first round pick. SF took Tim Alderson with the pick and Rick Porcello went a few picks later to the Tigers (although the Mets probably would not have wanted to go above slot).

I hope the Mets grab a couple of players in the Rule V, at $25K net at stake, it is a low risk high reward opportunity, albeit a longshot. There could be a few pitchers who have had their minor league careers interrupted with injuries that could be nice gambles.

Toby, with more and more players signing out of independent ball, how does the Rule V clock apply? If a player is signed by a MLB team, is then released and plays independent ball before resigning with an MLB team, does the clock continue to run? If the player signs directly with an independent team does the clock not start until he accepts a deal from an MLB team?

Absolutely...
But if you're at 40 then you have to take someone off when you sign a free agent...

According to Mets.com, there are only 33 on the roster, including the easily disposable Robinson Cancel and Ambi Burgos. If that's accurate, the Mets could add 5 and still have room for a couple of Rule 5 picks.

Does anyone remember why the Mets left Jesus Flores unprotected a few years back? I understand the logic that no team would take a catcher straight from A-ball and give him a year on the big league roster but what did the Mets have to lose by putting him on the 40 man?
