Fernando Martinez was 0-4 Wednesday night, snapping a 10 game hitting streak. Through 21 games for Escogido, he’s hitting .360/.402/.587 with 4 2B, 2 3B and 3 HR and is 4/5 stealing bases. The only nit is that he’s walked 5 times and fanned 14 in 75 AB. His .989 OPS is 6th in the DWL.
Thursday, Dillon Gee’s Ponce team completed a week old game in which Gee pitched one inning. In 12 IP in the PWL, Gee has allowed just seven hits, NO WALKS and fanned 13.
The table below compares the performance of Mets farmhands in the AFL to the AFL average pitcher.
| Player | IP | TBF | BB | SO | ERA | BB% | K% | Opp AVG | ERA + |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AFL Average | 2008 | 9240 | 865 | 1870 | 5.79 | 9.36 | 20.24 | .293 | - |
| Eddie Kunz | 14 | 77 | 10 | 14 | 10.93 | 12.99 | 18.18 | .369 | 53 |
| Bobby Parnell | 20 | 82 | 9 | 20 | 2.25 | 10.98 | 24.39 | .211 | 257 |
| Tobi Stoner | 19.2 | 82 | 7 | 15 | 3.66 | 8.54 | 18.29 | .227 | 158 |
| Jason Vargas | 25.2 | 102 | 5 | 13 | 2.10 | 4.90 | 12.75 | .208 | 276 |
-Eddie Kunz should just shake his head, go for a hike in Oregon and come to spring training ready to earn a roster spot.
-Bobby Parnell and Jason Vargas now have happy thoughts on which to dwell during their off-season conditioning to prepare for Spring Training and their battles to earn roster spots.
-Tobi Stoner acquitted himself well and also gets to think happy thoughts as he battles to make the AAA roster out of spring training.
-Kunz and Parnell both walked a higher percentage of batters than the league as a whole while Stoner and Vargas walked fewer.
-Parnell was the only pitcher with a better than average strikeout rate.
| Player | AB | AVG | OBP | SLG | OPS | OPS + |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AFL | 8120 | .293 | .371 | .473 | .844 | - |
| Daniel Murphy | 63 | .397 | .487 | .619 | 1.106 | 131 |
| Josh Thole | 69 | .319 | .400 | .420 | .820 | 97 |
| Shawn Bowman | 37 | .297 | .333 | .541 | .874 | 104 |
What I take away:
- Dan Murphy can really hit. (But Mets fans knew that already.)
- Shawn Bowman can hit for power.
- Josh Thole can’t. But he can get on base and that’s valuable.
Please note: OPS+ is not park adjusted. 100 in the league average.
