Why Ranked Here: Every scout I talked to in the New York Penn League like Havens’ bat. Some praised his situational hitting, and his ability to elevate the ball nearly at will. He hits from an unusual stance, starting his hands very low, but it works for him. Havens couples his offensive abilities with a valuable, up the middle defensive profile. He has a plus arm, and adequate range at short. Should the Mets move him across the diamond he has the potential to be a superior defensive second baseman.
2008: After earning third-team All-American honors and Second team All SEC honors, Havens’ professional debut in 2008 was very nearly totally lost to a series of injuries. He sat at the beginning of the season with elbow troubles before leg problems sidelined him at season’s end.
Dr. Pangloss Says: Havens grows up into an above average second baseman who will hit for average, a little power and get on base while playing strong defense.
On the Flipside: MLB pitchers bust him inside and exploit his unusual batting stance. Or perhaps his bat simply doesn’t develop to the point where he plays everyday as an above average starter, but is still a useful bench piece.

I’m very high on Havens — I like him a lot and am excited about what he could be with the bat. I am curious to see if his stance hampers his development though and who knows where he will end up defensively when all is said and done.
Can you please explain the mechanics of why you feel he’ll be vulnerable to the inside pitch?
When I saw him I thought his bat speed looked really excellent, The couple of times I was fortunate enough to see him I was mainly judging based on him swinging through pitches, but even still.
