BA Top 100

By Toby Hyde on 25. Feb, 2009

Baseball America has posted its list of the top 100 prospects in baseballbaseball-america-logo.  There were four Mets.  The indented number and commentary is original to BA.

#30 Fernando Martinez

0: Players in Double-A younger than Martinez last season.

#47 Wilmer Flores

0: Players younger than Flores (who turned 17 on Aug. 6) in full-season ball last season.

#77 Jonathan Niese

178: Innings pitched last season, including 14 in three big league starts.

#94 Brad Holt

1.87: ERA at short-season Brooklyn, one of four categories in which he led the New York-Penn League.

Top 2B

By Toby Hyde on 24. Feb, 2009

2B

  1. Greg Veloz 2B
  2. Josh Satin 2B
  3. Alzonzo Harris 2B
  4. Garcia, Emmanuel 2B

Notice that only Veloz made the top 41.  Satin was #42 and Harris wasn’t far behind.

The proceeds from the sale of the shirt pictured help support breast cancer research.  The full story is here if you’re the type of baseball fan whose wardrobe is not complete without one, or know a fan who needs one. http://www.save2ndbase.com/

Top Corner Infielders

By Toby Hyde on 24. Feb, 2009

3B

  1. Jefry Marte 3B
  2. Aderlin Rodriguez 3B
  3. Zach Lutz 3B
  4. Shawn Bowman 3B

A really observant reader will notice that I’ve flipped Lutz and Bowman (now Lutz is on top) from my top 41 and added A. Rodriguez.  I decided that Lutz’s youth pushes him in front of Bowman.

What does that picture have to do with corner infielders?  Simple, it was taken at Thirdbase, one of Des Moines, IA’s best bars.

1B

1. Ike Davis 1B

2. Stephen Welch 3B/1B

3. Lucas Duda 1B

Not much to add here other than it’s really hard to be a super prospect at 1B because MLB 1B are expected to hit so darn much.

Top C

  1. Francisco Pena C
  2. Josh Thole C
  3. Dock Doyle C
  4. Jordan Abbruzzo C

It’s getting harder to ignore Thole, who’s in big league camp.

Top LHP

By Toby Hyde on 24. Feb, 2009

jon-niese

In case you’ve been away from the blog for a few hours (always a bad idea) I’m breaking down my top prospects by position, which has turned into an enlightening experience.

LHP

  1. Jon Niese LHP
  2. Robert Carson LHP
  3. Angel Calero LHP
  4. Michael Antonini LHP
  5. Roy Merritt LHP
  6. James Fuller LHP
  7. Eric Niesen LHP

This list is a little shorter and thinner than that RHP list, isn’t it?  Here, it’s only the top four guys who have starter potential.

Top RHP

By Toby Hyde on 24. Feb, 2009

holt-windupRHP

  1. Brad Holt RHP
  2. Jenry Mejia RHP
  3. Scott Moviel RHP
  4. Gee, Dillon RHP
  5. Bobby Parnell RHP
  6. Eddie Kunz RHP
  7. Rustich, Brant RHP
  8. Eric Beaulac RHP
  9. Jeurys Familia RHP
  10. Steven Clyne RHP
  11. Nicholas Carr RHP
  12. Tobi Stoner RHP
  13. Kyle Allen RHP
  14. Ramirez, Elvin RHP
  15. Scott Shaw RHP
  16. Eduardo Aldama RHP
  17. Owen, Dylan RHP

The first four have a chance to start in the big leagues, whereas I view Parnell and Kunz as bullpen guys. A similar dance snakes its way through this ordering weaving bullpen arms around starting candidates.

Top SS

By Toby Hyde on 24. Feb, 2009

SSflores-k-mets-headshot

  1. Wilmer Flores SS
  2. Reese Havens SS
  3. Ruben Tejada SS
  4. Jose Coronado SS
  5. Juan Lagares SS

Easy enough to explain these: Flores has Havens on ceiling and the other guys haven’t really hit much.
