Garcia Has Sore Shoulder

By Toby Hyde on 28. Apr, 2009

After throwing 80 pitches Monday and giving up six runs in five innings, Freddy Garcia told Mike Harrington in the Buffalo News that the front of his shoulder is sore.

According to Harrington:

He twice hit 85 mph and had a few other pitches in the low 80s. He was mostly in the mid-70s and was throwing offspeed stuff in the mid-60s.

Yikes.  That’s not gonna work in the big leagues.

And from the dejected Garcia:

“Maybe I want to try it one more time. If I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to be feeling right now, I don’t know,” said Garcia, 32. “I have to make a decision what I’m going to do. I don’t know yet. Hopefully next time I’ll feel better. I want to wait for tomorrow and see how I feel.

“I don’t feel I have any power so I tried to do the best I can do with whatever I have.”

I thought signing Freddy Garcia was a good move at the time and still do.  It was risk free.  Either he put it together in spring training or AAA and helped the Mets or not.  Now, it’s looking increasingly likely that he will never help out the 2009 Mets.  So, like every team in baseball, the Mets search for pitching depth will continue…

Garcia Slammed in Bisons Loss

By Toby Hyde on 28. Apr, 2009

AAA- International League

Syracuse Chiefs 7, @ Buffalo Bisons 1

Through four innings, Freddy Garcia had allowed just a run on three hits in a 1-1 game.  Lastings Milledge had two of those hits. And after the fourth inning, came the fifth, in which Garcia was touched for six runs, five of which came with two out.  The big blow was a Ryan Langerhans grand slam.

The Bisons offense mustered just two hits including Cory Sullivan’s solo homer in the bottom of the first that briefly tied the game at 1-1.  A frustrated manager Ken Oberkfell has given up trying to explain his team’s struggles at the plate, “I’m at a loss for words.  It’s the same broken record day in and day out,” he said after the game.   Of his team’s offense, which is hitting a collective .196/.270/.294 through 17 games, Oberkfell said, “I’m getting very frustrated.  Hopefully they’re getting frustrated.  I don’t know where to go and don’t know what to say.  It’s getting to the point where it’s hard to sleep at night.”

Through 15 games, Nick Evans is 5-for-56 (.089) with 19 strikeouts.  Fernando Martinez, in the midst of a 1-for-15 skid, is down to .243/.289/.429.  Jesus Feliciano leads the Bisons with a .250 batting average.

In a lost cause, RHP Connor Robertson and Eddie Kunz both pitched two scoreless innings.  Robertson fanned three and Kunz two.

Jupiter Downs St. Lucie in OT

By Toby Hyde on 28. Apr, 2009

Advanced A – Florida State Leagujenry-mejia-releasee

Jupiter Hammerheads 2, @ St. Lucie Mets 1 (11 innings)

Jenrry Mejia (pictured) was excellent over 5 innings, but couldn’t prevent St. Lucie from dropping its sixth game in a row.  In five innings, Mejia allowed just one unearned run on five hits.  He struck out five without issuing a walk.  The walk-free effort was an especially good sign considering that in his last start, against these same Jupiter Hammerheads, he issued four free passes.

The St. Lucie offense -a group hitting .251/.324/.380 – collected six hits.  2B Greg Veloz (.271/.342/.357 in 70 AB) tripled home the Mets only run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 1-1.  However, Veloz was cut down at the plate trying to stretch it into an inside the park homer.  The very next batter, Kirk Nieuwenhuis (.206/.296/.302 in 63 AB) then doubled to center.

SS Reese Havens was 1-4, but committed his team-leading eighth error of the year.

For the second night in a row, Jupiter scored the winning run off Emary Frederick.

@ Charleston RiverDogs 6, Savannah Sand Gnats 1

The Gnats lost their fourth in a row in a game in which they committed four errors.  Jeurys Familia (2-1, 1.37) yielded three runs, only two of which were earned in 5.1 IP.  He also committed one of the miscues.

LF Juan Lagares (.288/.323/.356 in 59 AB) was 2-4 with a double to lead the Gnats offense while 2B Josh Satin added a 2-4 evening. Satin is hitting .368/.439/.404, good for seventh in the SAL in batting average.

Wilmer Flores (.328/.365/.379 in 58 AB) was 0-3 with a walk in his first game back in four days.  Fellow 17-year old, 3B Jefry Marte (.260/.299/.342 in 73 AB) was 1-4 but committed his seventh error in 18 games.

Monday Gametime Thread

By Toby Hyde on 27. Apr, 2009

AAA: Syracuse Chiefs (9-6) @ Buffalo Bisons (2-14) – 6:05 PM

RHP Marco Estrada (0-0, 2.45) vs. RHP Freddy Garcia (0-1, 4.50)

Mike Lamb will be active for tonight’s Bisons game. To make room for Lamb, the Mets released OF Frank Diaz.

According to a source, in his first start with Buffalo Garcia’s fastball topped out at 86 similar to his velocity in Spring Training. Last time, Garcia had his sinker working well. He dropped a few nice curveballs and was able to change speeds and move the ball around the strike zone.
