Opinion: Niese Should Start in Place of Nieve Friday

By Toby Hyde on 06. Jul, 2009

I believe that the Mets should promote LHP Jon Niese to start in place of Fernando Nieve for Friday’s game against the Cincinnatti Reds.

After firing a complete game shutout on Sunday, Niese is 4-1 in his last six starts with a 1.04 ERA.  In those 43.1 IP, he’s stuck out 39 and walked 10 while allowing just 30 hits and one home run.  Opponents’ are hitting a paltry .196 against the lefty.  His key ratios over this stretch: 8.1 k/9, 2.1 BB/9, .2 HR/9.  Conveniently enough, Niese will be on his regular rest Friday.

After Milwaukee smacked him around for 11 hits in 3.1 innings, Nieve walked six and gave up six hits in losing to Philadelphia on Saturday.

if jon niese doesn’t figure it out in the majors i’ll punch him in the huge nose of his.

either be good or get traded.

    don’t stay and suck.

he reads this blog right? thought so

LOL, staying true to your name, huh?

We’d all obviously love to see him succeed right now, but he seems to be a guy that screams “patience” with – it may take him a few years to really figure it out on the ML level. He has certainly been a different pitcher the past 5 weeks or so, but he’s 22 year old, who was pitching in A+ ball, all of two seasons ago. By normal standards, we’d be seeing him for his first call up later this year, and he’d get a another season or two afterwards to show what he has. So, lets not jump to conclusions here, and see how he develops over the next 2 seasons.

lol wow, yeah, talk about living up to your name!

I agree with Toby here.. I’ve liked what Nieve has brought, but his control is becoming problematic and he doesn’t ever go deep in games.. I would DFA Dessens and callup Niese.

its also a bonus that Cinncy’s 2 best hitters, Bruce and Votto, are left handed.

Coming up on the AS break as they are would be the perfect time to try something like this. But it doesn’t seem like Niese is even that big of a risk this time, he’s just going to well.

In turn its tough to make a case for Perez over Nieve as they finish out the first half.

the only thing that screams patience about niese is that he isn’t good. he is a young, lefty nelson figueroa.

he doesn’t have a major league fastball. unless he found some way to mitigate that, he will never be good.

you don’t need a fastball to get AAA hitters out.

unless he’s developed amazing location and control that keeps him from throwing 2-0 fastballs right down the middle to chipper jones, he’s just a trade chip.

teams like the mets don’t have nearly the same use for cheap fringe back of the rotation starters like smaller market teams do.

Sorry buddy, but this is just a foolish comment. If you cannot understand what makes him a legitimate prospect (who may or may not ever make it), and cannot distinguish between him and Figueroa, then there isn’t much to discuss.

Not that he’s anything special currently, but Barry Zito was a Cy Young with a 90 MPH fastball, Change-up and Curveball. He also had 102 wins in 6 seasons which averages out to 17 wins a season.

If Jon Neise is a 13-15 win a season pitcher I’d be very happy. I don’ t know how you can compare a 22 year old kid in AAA to a 35 year old basically career minor league player.

lol figueroa? could you be any more wrong? figgy has a bunch of junk he throws to get hitters out, none of which are plus pitches, hence why hes been a career minor leaguer.. niese’s curveball is a plus pitch and his developing cutter (and changeup i believe?) should keep hitter’s honest

jon niese’s FIP when he was getting bombed wasn’t bad. he was just getting singled to death. aka, i don’t buy that he’s doing much “differently.” his luck has just normalized and he’s probably sharpened some of his stuff a smidge.

he still has a below average major league fastball.

go find me lefty starters with bad fastballs who are good in the majors.

      1. What part of he’s still a developing prospect don’t you understand? You act like this guy has already shot his load and will no longer improve.

      2. Currently, Cliff Lee, Mark Buerhle, Zach Duke, John Lannan, Randy Wolf, to name just the first that come to mind. The list is really endless when it comes to lefties who don’t have dominant fastballs, who are still successful.

        what he said ^

baby: to be picking on Niese is pretty ridiculous, maybe if he was like 3-4 years older and still stuck in AAA, your comments would make sense.. and if you have EVER bothered to watch baseball you should know there are plenty of pitchers who throw in the upper to low 90′s and are still successful, lefty or righty.

did i say dominant? could’ve sworn i said below average.

they all have markedly better fastballs than jon niese.

You got me baby. Its obvious that you are not serious and just trying to yank our chain. with inane, factually unsupportable statements I’ll be sure to just ignore you in the future.
