baby: to be picking on Niese is pretty ridiculous, maybe if he was like 3-4 years older and still stuck in AAA, your comments would make sense.. and if you have EVER bothered to watch baseball you should know there are plenty of pitchers who throw in the upper to low 90′s and are still successful, lefty or righty.

1. What part of he’s still a developing prospect don’t you understand? You act like this guy has already shot his load and will no longer improve.

2. Currently, Cliff Lee, Mark Buerhle, Zach Duke, John Lannan, Randy Wolf, to name just the first that come to mind. The list is really endless when it comes to lefties who don’t have dominant fastballs, who are still successful.

jon niese’s FIP when he was getting bombed wasn’t bad. he was just getting singled to death. aka, i don’t buy that he’s doing much “differently.” his luck has just normalized and he’s probably sharpened some of his stuff a smidge.

he still has a below average major league fastball.

go find me lefty starters with bad fastballs who are good in the majors.

lol figueroa? could you be any more wrong? figgy has a bunch of junk he throws to get hitters out, none of which are plus pitches, hence why hes been a career minor leaguer.. niese’s curveball is a plus pitch and his developing cutter (and changeup i believe?) should keep hitter’s honest

Not that he’s anything special currently, but Barry Zito was a Cy Young with a 90 MPH fastball, Change-up and Curveball. He also had 102 wins in 6 seasons which averages out to 17 wins a season.

If Jon Neise is a 13-15 win a season pitcher I’d be very happy. I don’ t know how you can compare a 22 year old kid in AAA to a 35 year old basically career minor league player.

Sorry buddy, but this is just a foolish comment. If you cannot understand what makes him a legitimate prospect (who may or may not ever make it), and cannot distinguish between him and Figueroa, then there isn’t much to discuss.

the only thing that screams patience about niese is that he isn’t good. he is a young, lefty nelson figueroa.

he doesn’t have a major league fastball. unless he found some way to mitigate that, he will never be good.

you don’t need a fastball to get AAA hitters out.

unless he’s developed amazing location and control that keeps him from throwing 2-0 fastballs right down the middle to chipper jones, he’s just a trade chip.

teams like the mets don’t have nearly the same use for cheap fringe back of the rotation starters like smaller market teams do.
