SSA: Brooklyn Cyclones 9, @ Tri-City Valley Cats (HOU) 8
DH Dock Doyle tripled home three runs as the Cyclones won their ninth straight game.
Rookie (App): Greeneville Astros (HOU) 7, Kingsport Mets 6 (10 innings)
23-year old 1B Jeffrey Flagg (.377/.441/.528) was 2-5.
Eduardo Aldama put together a line with a lot of crooked numbers: 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K.
Rookie (GCL): GCL Mets 11, GCL Nationals 1
Five different Mets had two hits each, while the pitching staff yielded just two hits total all day. Thats fun in the Florida sun.

I made this comment/question in the previous post, but it seems more appropriate here. What’s the word on 17-year-old SS Wilfredo Tovar? Is he a legit international prospect? I don’t remember hearing anything about him, but he’s off to a pretty good start atop the GCL Mets lineup (.318/.375/.386 with 11 runs scored, 9 steals and 0 CS in just 11 games). Between the GCL and the VSL in 2009, he’s struck out just 5 times 82 ABs while drawing 8 walks.
There’s a lot to like in those numbers isn’t there? As the summer goes on, I’ll try to find out more about the guy.
How old is Dock Doyle? His name rings a bell too much for him to still be in Brooklyn
Give the guy a break, he was only drafted last year (5th round). He was a graduating senior, so he’s now 23 (remember, though, catchers tend to take longer to develop). He was a finalist for the 2008 Johnny Bench Award, along with Buster Posey and Jason Castro (Posey ended up winning the award, but both Posey (5th) and Castro (10th) went at the top of the first round). Doyle then put up some pretty good numbers at Kingsport last year (.308/.390/.390, 22 BB to 24 K in 159 AB). Frankly, I was surprised he didn’t start the year in Savannah, and am even more surprised that he’s not currently the starting catcher for the Cyclones. I have no idea why the Mets would use such a premium draft pick on a player that they seemingly don’t have any confidence in.
Right you are, Mr. Eddie. Doyle was the Mets 5th round pick last year out of Coastal Carolina. At 23, he’s too old for the NYP.

And the fact he is too old is strictly Omar and the organization’s fault. He has done nothing wrong – or nothing wrong that anyone will tell us.
He hit .300 in his shot last year, and get sent to extended spring training, the developmental version of solitary confinement.
Are we sure that Omar’s to blame for where Doyle’s been placed? I’m actually asking. I guess I just can’t imagine that Omar makes all of the personnel decisions, especially at the lower levels. The Mets organization employs some 300 players, after all.
