AAA: @ Rochester Red Wings (MIN) 7, Buffalo Bisons 3
Two more scoreless innings from Eddie Kunz (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K – pictured) were the best news here as Brandon Knight (4-9, 5.36) gave up six runs on 12 hits in 4 innings.
AA: Erie Seawolves (DET) 12, @ Binghamton Mets 4
Josh Petersen (.300/.380/.413 – age 26) was 3-for-4 with a double, his ninth of the year to push his average to an even .300. Ike Davis was 1-4 with a double, his third straight game with an extra-base hit.
Eric Bown (6 R, 6 IP), Stephen Clyne (4 R, 1 IP), and Edgar Alfonzo (2 R, 2 IP) were all ineffective.
A+: @ St. Lucie Mets 6, Jupiter Hammerheads (FLA) 4
In his first rehab assignment, CF Angel Pagan was 1-for-3 with an infield single, scored from first on a CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis double, and played five innings defensively.
RHP Scott Shaw walked five and gave up five hits while yielding four runs in five innings.
A: @ Greenvill Drive (BOS) 5, Savannah Sand Gnats 3
Wilmer Flores (.285/.325/.361 – pictured) was 2-3. In 180 PA since a ten-day rest in May, Flores is hitting .311/.346/.413 with nine doubles, a triple, two homers, six walks and just 17 strikeouts. And he’s 17 years old. When Flores’ rest began on May 9, he was hitting .250/.295/.288. Flores committed his tenth error of the year, while 3B Jefry Marte had two uh-ohs, pushing his season total to 31.
LHP Robert Carson (6-6, 2.22) gave up four runs, one earned in 5.2 IP. He walked two and fanned three.

Is there a record for unearned runs allowed in the Sally league and is Carson approaching it?
Having children playing the left side of his infield and generating a million ground balls makes the argument that it’s not his fault, but still, wow.
Any word on Cesar Puello, Brant Rustich, or Reese Havens? None of those guys have played for the past few days. I know Havens was HBP, but I don’t know about the others.
Also, some of the younger, more exciting prospects in the GCL have yet to make an appearance. Javier Rodriguez, Mike Hebert, and Brian Valenzuela are all listed as inactive, and Aderlin Rodriguez, while technically active, has yet to see any action. Are these guys likely to be worked into the mix as the season progresses?
And finally, what’s the word on 17-year-old SS Wilfredo Tovar? Is he a legit international prospect? I don’t remember hearing anything about him, but he’s off to a pretty good start atop the GCL Mets lineup (.318/.375/.386 with 11 runs scored, 9 steals and 0 CS in just 11 games). Between the GCL and the VSL in 2009, he’s struck out just 5 times 82 ABs while drawing 8 walks.
Rustich’s start was rained out on June 30th. It would seem he has just been pushed to the end of the line as all the starters have been on long rest due to three rain outs. If Nick Waechter starts over Rustich tonight then we will know something more has to be up.
regarding the younger players, keep in mind that the GCL and XST aren’t very different. There are still morning workouts, simulated and intersquad games to keep everyone busy. They could just be keeping these guys out of the GCL games because they are less prepared to succeed right now.
31 Errors? Wow, Marte is a future DH it sounds like.
Any idea what happened with Flores? Did he finally figure out how to hit a pitch that was beating him a lot?
wow, he’s 18 and he’s already relegated to DH only status.
of course, he’s only hitting .227 so a future at DH seems just as unlikely. Give him time, he’ll learn to do one or the other, maybe even both…
Carson with 20 unearned runs to 22 earned runs… yea WC that should be some kind of record. Not only do that many errors cost pitchers earned runs, it also costs them IP which raises their ERA.
Marte’s error in the 6th last night pretty much lost the game for Carson as well as ending his night early.
Marte isn’t going to fill up enough to be a DH.. I dunno how long he’ll last at 3B but he could move to a corner OF spot if his defense doesn’t get better.. I think people suggested Flores probably wont stay at SS and by the time he hits the majors he’ll be a corner OF as well..
