The Draft: The Ones Who Got Away

By Toby Hyde on 19. Aug, 2009

The Mets signed all but three of their first 28 picks.  The only ones in the first round the team did not come to terms with were hard-throwing righties, Damien Magnifico (5th Rd) and David Buchanan (6th rd).

Again, Rudy Terrasas:

I was very into both of those guys.  With Magnifico, he decided to go to college.  He was a power right-handed pitcher, really a one-pitch guy.  He’d flash you pretty good breaking ball, but he wasn’t as polished as Dotson or Matz.  I’ll tell you what, he had a good arm.  He just shut the door on us, and said he wanted to go to school.

The Buchanan kid, sometimes negotiations take a turn for the worse, and we just couldn’t meet his demands.
