Shandler: Mejia Love

By Toby Hyde on 20. Aug, 2009

jenry-mejia-releaseAt USAToday, Ron Shandler and Jeremy Deloney of baseballhq.com take a look at some prospects who have improved their stock this summer including RHP Jenrry Mejia and the Rockies LHP Christian Friedrich. The pair write:

Gifted with arm strength, the All-Star Futures Game participant fires fastballs into the mid-90s while keeping the ball down. Mejia also has a hard sinker and improving splitter. There are concerns about his size (6 feet, 162 pounds) and delivery, bringing into question his stamina as a starter. However, he is young and just learning how to pitch.

I think they’re confusing Mejia’s changeup which lives at 85 mph with a splitter, or maybe even a sinker.

Hattip Robert Z. for the link.

nobody understands what mejia’s change is.

the radio guy for binghamton mistakes it for a fastball half of the time.

      because it’s not a fastball.

mejia throws mid-90s. when he throws an 88 mph pitch, it’s not his fastball. it’s his foss-change-up-2-seamer hybrid.

when santana throws a pitch at 80mph, how do i know it’s not a fastball?

i wish santana threw his change up at 80 again…

    Toby,

You had to mention Chris Friedrich? You know how I thought the Mets should have drafted him last year instead of Ike Davis, but oh well. Davis is doing nice and I didn’t hate the pick. Just had Friedrich and Gillaspie as my first two picks in my shadow draft.

    :)

yeah, I knew Friedrich was a draft-crush of yours, so yes, I had to bring it up. You were right, btw, at least so far. He’s been great.
