Ruben Tejada’s Disappearing Leg Kick

By Toby Hyde on 10. Nov, 2009

One of the surprising things about watching the B-Mets in 2009 was Ruben Tejada’s leg kick.  Tejada is a little guy under 6′ and 180 lbs, with an offensive game predicated on contact and plate discipline.  However, he triggered his swing with a large leg kick where his front foot nearly reached the height of his back knee.

Now, four months later in the Arizona Fall League, the leg kick is gone.

Tejada simply picks up his front foot and places it in the same spot.  This will allow him to maintain a more balanced swing that will also give him more time to wait on pitches.  As far as I’m concerned, it’s a positive development.

The mechanical adjustment to his timing might well explain his recent struggles as he’s hitless in his last 12 AB and is down to .250/.302/.313 in 13 games in the AFL.

absolutely love the slow, nightwatch style zoom in on ruben’s leg kick, as if it was accused of being a sexual predator.

    good stuff.
