Upper Levels Wednesday: Duda and Lutz Homer, but Not Enough Pitching …

By Toby Hyde on 29. Jul, 2010

I fell asleep on my couch in the first inning, when Johan was getting hit all over the yard.  I woke up in the 13th.  Now, that’s a nap.  I probably should just go right back to bed.

AAA: @ Columbus Clippers 6, Buffalo Bisons 4

Dillon Gee’s (9-7, 4.92) up-up-and-down-down season continued with a “down” on Wednesday night: 5 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, HR, 3 BB, 3 K.  He’s now given up 10 runs on 19 (!) hits in his last nine innings of work.  Gee’s been good for a few starts in a row, and then too hittable for a few starts in a row all year long.
The bright side?  Lucas Duda homered again.  He’s up to 19 this year between AA and AAA and .297/.370/.587 between the two levels with a line of .309/.370/.683 in 37 games at AAA.  He’s slugging .742 against RHP in AAA.
SS Ruben Tejada was 0-4.  Since rejoining the Bisons he’s hit .217 (5-for-23).
Fernando Martinez (.238/.300/.427) was 1-3 with a walk.  He’s now hitting .103 (4-for-39) in his last 11 games.

AA: Portland Sea Dogs 11, @ Binghamton Mets 9 (10 innings)
It’s so nice when the affiliates mimic their parent club: the B-Mets squandered a great comeback when Manny Alvarez gave up a two run home run in the 10th.
Apparently Zach Lutz (.291/.417/.575) is trying to make up for lost time.  In his second game back, he was 3-4 with two doubles, a home run and a walk.  He’s 6-8 in his first two games with four extra-base hits. That’ll play.
Sean Ratliff hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, capping a four-run inning.
The ‘Dogs beat up Mark Cohoon (1-3, 7.24) for seven runs, five earned on eight hits in 2.2 innings.  Cohoon in the SAL: 1.30 ERA in 13 starts.  Coohoon at AA: 7.24 ERA in 6 starts. Numbers are only half the story, folks.  It’s also how you achieve the numbers.

    Toby,
Do you intentionally not have a forum for questions to ask you or am I just a novice? Please send me an email if that is OK? I also signed up on twitter thinking I could tweet you which I thought I did. Please advise.
    Thanks,

Rich, we don’t have a message board around here. I usually respond to most things in the comment section directed at me. I tried to DM you on twitter, but you weren’t following me. I respond to almost all of my twitter questions as well.
And yes, your boy JB Brown, the Mets 14th rounder out of UoP is having a monster July for Brooklyn (.394/.413/.592), but as a 21 year old, he’ll be on the old side for whichever a-ball level he starts at next year.

My other Big West conference boy Justin Schafer is also tearing it up, albeit at KIngsport who just turned 22.

I think if either or both of these guys get a shot at High A that’s not too old? What do you think?
