#23 – RHP Akeel Morris

By Toby Hyde on 15. Mar, 2011

Bats/Throws: R/R

Height/Weight: 6’1”/170

Acquired: 10th rd 2010 (Charlotte Amalie HS)

Born: 11/14/92 (St. Thomas, VI)

2010 Rank: NR

Why Ranked Here: This might be a bit of a reach for Morris, but I just like his potential.  He sits 91-92 and can touch 94 with very quick arm action that makes up for a rail thin frame.  His curveball, which Mike reported to me had nice bite at times, was in the mid-70s last year.  As a product of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, Morris did not play a whole lot of really high caliber baseball, and was described by Mets people as very raw.  However, they were unanimously pleased by his progress in 2010.

2010: The only high school player, drafted in the first ten rounds by the Mets, Morris began his career in the GCL. The Mets assigned Morris to the Gulf Coast League where he gave up just 13 hits in 24.2 innings with 28 strikeouts, both of which are impressive marks.  However, he also walked 17 men, a rate of 6.20 BB/9.  He simply must throw more strikes to move up this ranking next year.

Dr. Pangloss Says: Potential starter if the breaking balls and command come along.  Otherwise, I’ll settle for a flamethrowing reliever.

Debbie Downer Says: TINSTAAPP

Projected 2011 Start: Kingsport (It would take a monster spring for him to break camp with Savannah.)

MLB Arrival: 2016

Fun: Here’s video of Morris before last year’s draft.
