Height/Weight: 6’4”/200
Acquired: Supplemental 1st rd ’08 (33rd overall) (UNC Wilmington)
Born: 10/13/86 (Albermarle, NC)
2010 Rank: #7
Why Ranked Here: I drank the Kool-Aid on Holt, ranking him #3 overall in the system after the 2008 season and #7 last year. Then he was completely ineffective at both advanced-A and AA in 2010.
He no longer throws as hard as he once did. He topped out at 93 in the AFL while sitting at 91. There were reports he was throwing a little harder in Spring Training.
His secondary offerings, which include a slider, curve and changeup don’t feature any special pitches yet.
This is a big year for Holt. Was 2010 an aberration? Or was his 2008 performance in college and Brooklyn the outlier?
2010: Holt opened the 2010 season on the AA Binghamton Mets disabled list with a strained right wrist. He transitioned from injured to ineffective. He was sent down to advanced-A St. Lucie on June 18th to rediscover himself. And his walk rate rose at the lower level. It was a dreadful 2010 season.
Dr. Pangloss Says: Can I pretend it’s 2008 again and I see top of the rotation stuff here? No? How about a strong reliever?
Debbie Downer Says: I don’t see anything special here aside from a lot of walks. He’ll never surpass replacement level.
Projected 2011 Start: AA Binghamton
MLB Arrival: Late 2012.
