#29 – RHP Kyle Allen

By Toby Hyde on 08. Mar, 2011

Bats/Throws: R/R

Height/Weight: 6’3”/190

Acquired: 24th rd 2008 (The Pendleton School)

Born: 2/12/90 (Lajes Field, Portugal)

2010 Rank: 13

Why Ranked Here: This ranking essentially gives Allen a mulligan on 2010 because he fought back issues all year long before the Mets shut him down in the first week of August.

The Mets also attributed Allen’s struggles (5.24 ERA, 54 BB, 53 K in 101.1 IP) to his ongoing attempts to refine his breaking ball, a process that did not come easily.

When he’s healthy, Allen brings a strong athleticism to the hill, a major league average fastball and a feel for a changeup.

Why is Allen ranked in front of Carson?  Carson was healthy and not dominant at advanced-A and was beat up in double-A.  Allen wasn’t healthy, but his was not good.  Perhaps, with health Allen will be better.

2010: Allen owned a K/BB ratio of 1 (54 K/53 BB) at advanced-A after doing better than 2-to-1 in Savannah the year before.  He hit 12 batters and gave up over a hit an inning.  Eight times in his 19 appearances, he walked four batters, but he never walked five.

Dr. Pangloss Says: Number four starter

Debbie Downer Says: Dr., we’re talking about a guy who was hurt and ineffective in advanced-A.  I say he’s no more than an up and down guy.

Projected 2011 Start: St. Lucie

MLB Arrival: 2014
