#37 – 2B Jordany Valdespin

By Toby Hyde on 04. Mar, 2011

Bats/Throws: L/R

Height/Weight: 5’10”/150lbs (I Love media guides!)

Acquired: NDFA (2007)

Born: 12/23/87 (San Pedro de Macoris, DR)

2010 Rank: 33

Why Ranked Here: A faster runner than Shields, ranked a spot behind him, Valdespin is quicker and reached AA in 2010, something Shields hasn’t yet accomplished.  The Mets added Valdespin to the 40-man roster this past off-season to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, a sign he has some real fans within the organization.  With below average game power, Valdespin still must both become more patient at the plate and learn to leverage his speed into becoming a weapon on the basepaths.  He was just 13-for-23 stealing bases in the FSL and 4-of-6 in double-A.

2010: Valdespin played shortstop in April and early June for St. Lucie but moved to second base to accommodate Wilmer Flores when he was promoted from Savannah after the All-Star Break.  He graduated to AA in the first week of August where he really struggled.

Dr. Pangloss Says: MLB second-baseman who is a threat on the base paths

Debbie Downer Says: He’ll be 23 on Opening Day 2011 and walks a few times a month.  He’s an MLB back-up at best.

Projected 2011 Start: AA.  He’ll play some SS and some second base when Reese Havens takes, or needs, a day off

MLB Arrival: September 2013
