#40 – RF Javier Rodriguez

By Toby Hyde on 04. Mar, 2011

Bats/Throws: R/R

Height/Weight: 6’2”/165 lbs

Acquired: 2nd rd (2008 – Puerto Rico Baseball Academy)

Born: 4/4/90 (Dorado, PR)

2010 Rank: NR

Why Ranked Here: After hitting a combined .212 over his first two seasons, both spent in the GCL, Rodriguez, the Mets surprise second-round pick in 2008, started hitting, and hitting for power in 2010.  The Mets moved him to right field this year, where his play was acceptable, I’m told.  Also, he doesn’t run, having gone just 1-for-3 attempting to steal bases this year.  The move to the corner, and the lack of speed in his offensive game put a significant amount of pressure on his bat to continue developing.

2010: Rodriguez hit.  He hit lefties.  He hit righties.  He hit at home.  He hit on the road.  He earned a nod on the All-Appalachian League team.  He’s still just 20.   He’s still lanky, but he’s getting stronger.

Dr. Pangloss Says: Average everyday RF.

Debbie Downer Says: Yawn.  No walks.  .364 BABIP.  He’s not young for a top prospect at 21 and hitting the SAL for the first time.  He won’t be an above replacement-level big leaguer.

Projected 2011 Start: Savannah Sand Gnats right fielder.

MLB Arrival: 2014/2015
