Monday afternoon, the Brooklyn Cyclones released their initial roster of 2009. Many more players will be added over the course of the season, perhaps even before Opening Night Friday, at home against the Staten Island Yankees. To my eyes, it’s currently one of the weaker Cyclones rosters in the last few years.

You can meet some of these Mets prospects on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday the team, the mascots, and the coaches will be at Prospect park, on the Long Meadow at the 9th St. entrance from 6 PM to 8 pm. On Wednesday, the players will again be out at Borough Hall from 11:30-1:30 signing autographs and hanging out.

For every player, I will give, B/T, Ht/Wt, Date of Birth

Catchers

Juan Centeno – L/R – 5’10″, 166 lbs – 11/16/89

Ralph Henriquez – S/R – 6’1″, 190 lbs – 4/7/87

Dock Doyle – L/R – 6’0″ 195lbs – 3/24/86

I liked the Mets pick of Dock Doyle (pictured) in the fifth round out of Coastal Carolina in 2008. Assigned to the rookie level Appalachian League, Doyle hit .308/.390/.390 with 22 walks and 24 strikeouts in 41 games. I understand that the Mets worked extensively with him on his game handling in 2008 because like many college catchers, he didn’t call his own game. Surely, I thought he was ticketed for Savannah in 2009, where he could learn by doing. Instead, unless there’s an injury I don’t know about, the Mets have held the 23-year old back while pushing other players. Yeah, I know the Mets want Brooklyn to win, but from a player-development perspective, I just don’t get this at all. At 23, Doyle will be old for the New York Penn League. Even if he jumps straight to the FSL in 2010, he’ll be old for that league at 24.

Infielders

Luis Nieves – S/R – 5’11″, 155lbs – 12/15/88

Sam Honeck – L/L – 6’2″, 210 lbs -6/19/87

Matt Gaski – L/R – 5’10″185 lbs – 5/12/86

John Servido – R/R – 6’1″ 194 lbs – 8/22/85

James Schroeder – R/R – 6’0″, 210lbs – 12/13/86

Nick Giarraputo – R/R – 6’4″, 202 lbs – 5/29/88

1B Honeck, the Mets 11th round pick out of Tulane this year, hit .313/.450/.630 for the Green Wave with a team-leading 16 bombs.

3B Schroeder was the Mets 33rd round pick, at #1004 out of Southern Arkansas. Schroeder won the Auburn Smith Award as the top male athlete at SAU for atheletic ability, performance, character, and scholastic achievement. Schroeder hit .344/.445/.688 for the Muleriders with 19 jacks. As a pitcher, he was 8-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 80 innings. He fanned 72 and walked 36.

Giarraputo, now 21, the Mets 12th round pick in 2006 out of HS in California hit .242/.301/.303 for Savannah last year in 56 games.

Outfielders

Alex Gregory – R/R – 6’0″, 210 lbs – 11/07/86

Luis Rivera – R/R – 6’1″, 187 lbs – 1/25/84

Seth Williams – R/R – 6’2″ 205 lbs – 11/21/85

Alex Gregory, the Mets 17th round pick out of Radford this year, is the guy to watch in the Cyclones outfield. Gregory hit .407/.518/.655 leading the Big South in batting average and OBP. In fact, he became the first player to lead the Big South in batting average three straight times and hit over .400 in all three years. Gregory walked 36 times while whiffing just 23 times in 177 AB in 2009. The senior signee credits a drill he designed himself to teach himself plate discipline and notes that not getting drafted in 2008 was a big motivation in 2009.

Pitchers

Angel Cuan – L/L – 5’11″, 150 lbs – 5/29/89

Brandon Moore – R/R – 6’3″, 190 lbs – 1/24/86

Erik Turgeon – R/R – 6’1″, 180 lbs – 3/25/86

John Church – R/R – 6’3″, 235 lbs – 11/4/86

Mark Cohoon – L/L – 6’2″, 195 lbs – 9/15/87

Wes Wrenn – R/R – 5’11″, 186 lbs – 4/17/86

Mike Lynn – R/R – 5’11″, 185 lbs – 10/18/84

Sammy Martinez – R/R – 5’11″, 185 lbs – 7/6/87

Lance Hoge – L/L – 5’10″, 185 lbs – 5/6/87

Jim Fuller – L/L – 5’10″, 180 lbs -6/1/87

Mike Powers – R/R – 6’2″, 180 lbs – 4/7/86

Brandon Sage – L/L – 6’2″, 210 lbs – 10/3/86

Collin McHugh – R/R – 6’2″, 195 lbs – 6/19/87

Matias Carrillo – L/L – 6’2″, 195 lbs – 12/13/86

The Mets drafted John Church (pictured) in the 23rd round out of West Florida where he led the Argonauts and the Gulf Southern Conference with a 1.55 ERA in 21 appearances, 18 out of the bullpen. In 75.1 innings, he fanned a whopping 92 batters while walking 23 and yielding just 56 hits. Church was the Pitcher of the Year at Polk Community College in 2008. The big-guy played a little outside linebacker at Lake Whales HS.

The Mets drafted the Southern Conference Pitcher of the year, Wes Wrenn, in the 35th round of the 2009 draft. Wrenn was 9-3 with a 3.62 ERA in 14 starts for the Bulldogs with 82 strikeouts and 25 walks in 102 innings.

The Mets drafted Hoge in the 36th round out of Kansas State making him the first Mets pick out of K-State since the Metropolitans grabbed Greg Korbe in 1978. Hoge (6-4, 4.54) was the Wilcats #2 starter.

Fuller was 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA for Brooklyn last season with 22 K and 5 BB in 18 IP. He clearly needs more seasoning before getting ready to tackle the SAL.

The Mets drafted Sage in the 37th round out of South Alabama.
